FLIP THE FROG PLANTER 1930S CERAMIC Black & White FIGURAL, UB IWERKS DISNEY CARTOON JAPANThis vintage Black and White container is an early original piece of cinema and comic character history. “FLIP THE FROG” was created by UB IWERKS, the leading artist for Walt Disney as part of the early Disney Studios.
The hand-painted container was manufactured in Japan and imported to the United States in the early 1930s. Now about 90 years old, these are becoming harder to find. Stamped “Made in Japan,” it has no glazing on the bottom, similar to the other items from this series.
It is in good vintage condition and measures 4 ¼” L x 2 ¾” W (widest) x 3 ¼” H. Nice paint and glaze with no crazing noted. No chips. It has two hairline fractures which show aging and no repairs. (see photos) No attempts have been made to clean the interior. The rounded curve on the bottom is not a fracture but the original mold indentation seen in others made from this same series.
The first few Mickey Mouse and Silly Symphonies cartoons were animated almost entirely by Iwerks, including Steamboat Willie, The Skeleton Dance, and The Haunted House. UB left Disney for a time and concentrated on marketing his creation, “FLIP THE FROG,” which the character can still be seen in action today in old cartoons on the internet. Later he rejoined The Disney Studio to work on special effects. He received many Academy Awards for his artwork and innovation, such as the multi-layering 3D effect on Snow White being one example.
