As you look back in the history of memorable Disney Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs ceramic sets, each era features spectacular standouts that are sought after by serious collectors. Those Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs sets stand above others because of their quality, workmanship, classic features and attention to detail.
In 1938 and 1939, Brayton’s Laguna Pottery created the very first ceramic figures of Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs for Disney. Although the ceramic colors did not exactly look like the colors of the characters as they appeared in the film, it was because in the 1930’s they could not duplicate the mixed paints employed in the animated motion picture. Brayton’s Laguna Pottery, however, did set the standard for the craftsmanship of depicting Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs.
Then, starting in the early 1940’s Evan K. Shaw and the American Pottery Company manufactured what many feel was the most beautiful Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Ceramic Set. These beautifully detailed and vividly decorated characters are considered to be the best representations of the classic images of Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. As collectors of Disney ceramics from all eras, we were impressed that when we visited Frank and Jeannette Thomas at their home, the only Disneyana item they displayed in their living room was a set of Evan K. Shaw American Pottery Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs!
Since each ceramic piece was individually hand painted, each piece displays unique features and expressions. Each ceramic figure within this Snow White Set is true to his or her own character in Walt Disney’s wonderful Snow White Featured Film that was released in 1937!
Shaw/American Pottery figures are known for their details, expressions and quality. Shaw/American Pottery had their own Mold Makers. The Disney Studios would provide model sheets to be followed for each design. Once Shaw/American Pottery came up with a new concept, it would have to be approved by the Disney Studio artists and the Disney licensing division before any production could begin.
